12-year-old ex-Wisconsin teacher gets bail for secret videos
MADISON, Wisconsin (AP) – A former Wisconsin high school teacher accused of secretly filming undressed students during field trips was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Friday after reaching a plea deal with federal prosecutors.
David Kruchten, 39, of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, had previously pleaded guilty to one count of attempted production of child pornography.
Prosecutors alleged that Kruchten used his job as a business professor at Madison East High School to secretly film students on field trips to Wisconsin and Minnesota.
According to court documents, he accompanied students from the East High Business Club on overnight trips to Wisconsin Dells and Lake Geneva as well as Minneapolis in 2019. Students discovered hidden cameras planted in air fresheners in their hotel rooms while traveling to Minneapolis. Investigators found cans of similar air freshener in photos taken by students on trips to Wisconsin, prosecutors said.
Kruchten was indicted last year on several counts of attempted production of child pornography and resigned his teaching post.
In an eight-page handwritten letter filed earlier this week in United States District Court, Kruchten wrote that he had started spying on his family “to cope with stress and fill a craving for adrenaline” and to find out what they were saying about him when he wasn’t around, reported the Wisconsin State Journal.
This led to the planting of hidden cameras to capture pets, family, friends, babysitters and even his parents and grandparents, before he started spying on his students, Kruchten wrote in a letter. to U.S. District Judge James Peterson.
âIt was not my goal when I entered teaching and it was not my goal when I started this behavior course,â Kruchten wrote. âMy goal was not a collection of child pornography. My interest in these voyeuristic videos wasn’t in capturing college students engaged in sex acts, my interest was the same (like) it was with my grandparents, and my pets and my wife – to see what people do when I’m not around.
However, he wrote, it would be a lie to say that there was “no sexual component”.
Peterson also sentenced Kruchten to 20 years on probation following his time in prison.
