Alabama Power Foundation accepting applications for two new teacher grant programs

Applications are now available for two new scholarship programs for teachers of the Alabama Energy Foundation aimed at stimulating success and preparing public school students for college and careers.
Last month, the foundation announced the creation of the new Scholar and Champion scholarships. Focusing on public school educators in communities with higher poverty rates, the grants provide resources that can be used to help improve student performance in key subject areas and equip teachers with tools and of vocational training.
“We encourage teachers and teacher teams to apply for these new grants,” the foundation said. Daisy White.
“The Scholar and Champion scholarships were designed with input from teachers. They reflect what teachers themselves have told us – the support they need to help improve student performance,” said White, Community Initiatives Manager – Charitable Giving.
The scholarships support public school teachers in grades two through eight, with a focus on improving student achievement in math and English to grade level or higher proficiency.
Champion grants are for public school teachers in grades 9-11 and are intended to better prepare students in math and science so that they are career or college ready upon graduation.
Up to $7,500 is available for each Scholar or Champion scholarship. Teachers can apply individually or in teams of collaborative teachers, targeting a specific grade level and subject to improve student achievement. Grants are available to support public schools where at least 50% of students receive free or reduced-price lunches.
Grants can be used for a variety of purposes: to obtain teaching materials; for professional development and training; or to purchase technology for the classroom, such as laptops and projectors, software and online resources.
Applications for Scholar and Champion scholarships are posted on the Alabama Energy Foundation website. The deadline to apply is Friday, June 3.
