Bee Best: Taylor Marks wins Readiness of the Year poll

Taylor Marks is committed to maximizing his final months of high school, at Jesuit, and he took on the role of leader of a nationally ranked men’s volleyball team.

Marks was the driving force behind an 18-0 Marauders team that took the spring season by storm but didn’t have the opportunity to compete for a Sac-Joaquin Section or CIF Northern California Championship due COVID-19, which wiped out all playoff preparation sports.

Taylor is now a student-athlete at Cal Lutheran, but he still has that Big Red Jesuit glow after running away with The Bee Best’s Boys Athlete of the Year vote for 2021.

Marks emptied his senior season with a searing pain in his shoulder, but he never hesitated to attack the net or throw a power spike, in an attempt to try to send that ball either into the neck of someone, either on the floor. He had summer surgery to repair two tears in his left shoulder.

Joe Davidson has covered the sport for The Sacramento Bee since 1988. He has won 14 awards from the California Prep Sports Writer Association. In 2021, Davidson was awarded the CIF Distinguished Service. He is a member of the California Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Davidson was a high school athlete in Oregon, where he participated in football and track and field.
