Four seniors from the Springdale High School class of 1956 missed their graduation to enter the armed forces.

SPRINGDALE, Ark. – The Springdale School District has added 4 honorary graduates to the class of 2022.

The 4 “super seniors” missed their own diploma in 1956 when they joined the armed forces. Air Force Veteran Carl Stults, Army Veteran Bobby Burke, Air Force Veteran Charles Leroy Moon and Air Force Veteran Bob Self, have joins the 484 graduates of Springdale High School.

“I took a GED test when I joined the Air Force and at the time Springdale didn’t recognize the GED test,” Self said. “I graduated from little rock central.”

Self expressed his gratitude for his time in the service, traveling to Hong Kong and the Philippines.

“I don’t want people telling me what to do and I’m like okay, I joined the Air Force,” Self said of his thoughts before joining the Air Force. “But about two days after I arrived, they were really telling me what to do”

Springdale educators say they found out the 4 seniors were missing their degrees when they met them at the Wagon Wheel Café in Springdale.

“These guys all class they meet, I think, once a month for lunch,” Jason Jones said. “These are real Springdale Bulldogs, they’re all about Springdale.”

The Springdale School District administration said the addition of the “super seniors” came as a surprise to students. During the ceremony, educators listed the many accomplishments the 4 had achieved, such as owning successful businesses, working in the poultry industry, and even raising racehorses. The educators hoped to honor the 4 seniors but also take advantage of the moment to learn.

“They’re going to learn honor, they’re going to learn respect, it’s just going to be a special time for them,” Jones said of the Class of 2022.
