Match.com owner settles lawsuit with Santa Clara DA over subscription renewals – CBS San Francisco

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – The parent company of Match.com and other leading online dating services has reached a $ 2 million settlement with several prosecutors’ offices in a consumer protection lawsuit.
Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen, along with DA offices in Santa Cruz, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Santa Barbara counties and the Santa Monica City District Attorney’s Office, sued Match Group for having allegedly charged customers for automatic renewal without express consent.

“As with dating, consumers may not want to commit to a lifetime paid web service,” Rosen said Thursday.
The lawsuit alleged that the company’s online registration processes failed to notify customers that they were signing up for an auto-renewing service and did not obtain affirmative consent, as required by law. Prosecutors also claimed that Match Group violated California law by failing to inform consumers how to cancel and that the cancellation process was “long and tedious.”
“Businesses need to make sure it’s just as easy to opt out of and sign up for their services,” Rosen said.

As part of the settlement, Match was ordered to clearly disclose its auto-renewal terms, obtain affirmative consent before charging for auto-renewal, as well as send customers a payment confirmation that clearly includes the terms. renewal.
Match Group has also been ordered to make it easy for customers to cancel services, including online, upon request.
The company did not admit any wrongdoing, prosecutors said.
