STUDENTS at Swindon schools may have missed the opportunity for traditional internships due to coronavirus restrictions, but they will soon be able to get a glimpse into the world of work.
Wiltshire College is working with Swindon and Wiltshire Careers Hub and Swindon & Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership to create an online platform for schools in the county.
The YourPlacement project allows students aged 14 to 16 to discover a wide range of professions. A number of companies have already signed up for the program.
Iain Hatt, Deputy Director of Curriculum and Quality at Wiltshire College & University Center, said: âThe college is delighted to be part of the launch of the YourPlacement platform in Wiltshire.
âThe college knows how important internships are for young people for their careers. They give students a better understanding of the career of their choice, improve their skills and provide key insight into joining the world of work.
Enrollment must be done in children’s schools and submitted through the school’s career guidance officers. Students will then have access to an online portal.
Chippenham MP and Minister of State for Universities Michelle Donelan supported the program. Companies that have signed up include Wiltshire Police, AJ Reynolds, Steam Museum, and REME.
Paddy Bradley, CEO of Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership, said: âThere is an urgent need to help young people prepare for the changing world of work. YourPlacement will bring students the experience of industrial and commercial environments and allow them to focus on coming out of this difficult time more employable than ever.
YourPlacement Developer Daniel Busson said: âIt is so important that our young people have access to the right career information and experiences whenever they need it, and it has been a real pleasure working with Wiltshire College & University Center to help provide a platform that can do just that.
âWe look forward to working with the College over the next few months to help develop the content already available on the platform. ”
