The National Technology-Enhanced Learning Program (NPTEL) has launched a series of new courses on its online learning portal SWAYAM. Courses which range from electric vehicles and renewable energies to the Internet of Things, business and sustainability will be taught by the faculty of IISc and IITs.
Classes will be part of the July-December semester and admissions for this have already started on the website. The registration deadline is August 2.
According to Professor Vignesh Muthuvijayan, NPTEL coordinator. IIT Madras, the program is linked to 4,000 educational institutions across the country, covering the fields of engineering, science, business, the arts and management. Some of the more popular courses have been Data Science for Engineers, courses in programming languages such as Python and C ++, and soft skills.
The program has been offering free courses to learners across the country since 2003. A joint venture between IISc Bengaluru and IITs Kanpur, Roorkee, Kharagpur, Madras, Bombay, Guwahati and Delhi, it reportedly recorded 1.4 crore enrollment for its courses at this day. People of all backgrounds and ages can access all courses, and get certified as well, via the MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) format, which are essentially video conferences with integrated tests, accessible without restrictions.
The most useful aspect of the program (aside from the unrestricted access feature, perhaps) is the domain certification which allows learners to gain expertise in any of 51 domains across 12 disciplines.
