Roblox resumed services on Sunday after a major outage that lasted for three days.

Roblox, an online platform that allows users to play and create games, started experiencing issues around 7 p.m. ET on Thursday, October 28.

Initial reports speculated that the outage was linked to a Halloween promotional event in partnership with the Chipotle food chain. However, Roblox said it was “unrelated to any specific experiences or partnerships on the platform.”

The company said in an update to its status page last week that it had identified the root cause of the outage as an “internal system problem” and was working on a fix. By Sunday evening, the platform was fully operational again.

“We’re sorry how long it took us to restore service,” Roblox founder and CEO David Baszucki said in a blog post on Sunday.

“This was a particularly difficult failure as it involved a combination of several factors. A central system in our infrastructure was overwhelmed, caused by a subtle bug in our backend service communications while under heavy load.

“It was not due to a spike in external traffic or to any particular experience,” he added. “Rather, the failure was caused by the growth in the number of servers in our data centers.”

Baszucki suggested that the developers of the platform could be compensated for potential losses during the downtime. Roblox shares 30% of virtual purchase revenue with its community of creators.

“We will implement a policy to make our creative community economically whole following this outage,” said Baszucki.

For games like Epic Games’ Roblox and Fortnite, vacations like Halloween can be key sales generators as companies try to steer players toward purchasing in-game promotional items such as new costumes and skins.

Roblox is incredibly popular with children. The app has over 43.2 million daily active users, many of whom are 13 years of age or younger.

The New York Times reported on Sunday how several American children became stressed during the blackout, some spending time with their families or playing outside over Halloween weekend instead.

News of the outage is expected to weigh on Roblox’s share price on Monday. The company went public with great fanfare in March and the stock has since climbed more than 20%. Roblox has a market cap of $ 48.3 billion.

Roblox is seen as a key player in the so-called “metaverse,” a term that refers to shared virtual reality. The trend has gained momentum lately, with social media giant Facebook changing its name to Meta last week to reflect the growing attention to the metaverse.
