A math teacher in the United States has been placed on leave after being filmed performing a “Native American” dance in a classroom.

Candice Reed John W North High School chanted “SOH CAH TOA” and even jumped on desks and waved her arms for a few minutes in front of students watching in shock, according to reports. It appears that she used dance to teach trigonometric functions to her students.

The video shows the teacher wearing a black mask and a head covering that has been cut to resemble a Native American feathered dress item.

Shadae Johnson, the person who initially shared the video on Facebook, said it was filmed by a Native American student taking Reed’s class.

Johnson, who is a member of the Urban Indigenous Peoples Advisory Council in Vancouver, said the Native American student recorded the teacher’s act for several minutes because he felt “violence was being committed against him. and that he had the right to record “.

“I am sharing this video because these behaviors can no longer be swept under the carpet! We must end discrimination and violence against Indigenous youth in schools! We are not in the 60s anymore, she should know better ! ” Shadae wrote while sharing the video.

Following the incident, the Riverside Unified School District said it did not approve of the teacher’s behavior and put her on leave. The district is currently investigating the incident.

“These behaviors are totally unacceptable and constitute an offensive representation of the vast and vast Native American cultures and practices,” the district said in a statement to the community.

“We are deeply committed to implementing inclusive practices and policies that honor the rich diversity of our district and the greater region. We will work with our students, families, staff and community to regain your trust,” said he added.

Internet users strongly criticized the teacher for his lack of respect and ignorance.

One user wrote: “Completely unconscious as the children watch, aghast and alarmed. Unconscious as she grew up in a cultural bubble.”

“As an educator, there is NO WAY that there is a justifiable reason for this,” wrote another.
